Private William James Mulholland

 

William James Mulholland was born on 17 May 1883 at Milltown, Ballymoney, County Antrim, the first of three children of hackler James Mulholland and his wife Jane (née McArthur). His father died when he was just six years old.

On 11 September 1909 he married nurse Winifred Mary Alice Murphy at Drumreagh Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney. The couple had three children over the next four years. By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 65 Charlotte Street, Ballymoney, with his wife, first child, and grandmother, and working as a solicitor's general clerk.

Mulholland enlisted in the North Irish Horse in 1914 or 1915 (regimental number unknown). He served with the regiment throughout the war at its Antrim reserve depot.

In mid-1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
